Terrific Texture with Gel Medium

I’ve been fiddling around with these little mixed media boards, some collage, Matisse Gel Medium, and some acrylic paint. This is the technique I demonstrated on the Matisse stand at the Royal Easter Show, and at the Matisse Open Day. My paintings at the Open Day were sold before they were dry. They are fun to do and very easy. The students in my class at the evening college often paint them, – sometimes a whole series. It’s a great technique for gaining confidence. It comes from the book Celebrate your Creative Self” by Mary Todd Beam. This book is a winner! I see it as the absolute best book for acrylic techniques. I always take it to class because many of the students see a technique in there that they can adapt to their own purposes. I must have had this book at least three years, but no matter how long I live I will never get to the end of the techniques in this book.
I painted the postcard I did for Anita in acrylics on one of these little boards too. They’re not suitable for watercolour, but wonderful for acrylics.
Speaking of books – I just read Without Reservations by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Alice Steinbach. I just loved it. It’s about the time she took a year off and went to Europe, but it’s not ‘the usual’ at all. In fact I have hot pink stickies in several places, where I just want to write down what she said so I can remember it.

    Wendy!

These are fabulous – both in colour and texture. Love them.

Have been following your blog for awhile and am really enjoying how you share your thoughts and processes. This post has been one of the most inspiring….so glad there’s a place to check in and see what you’re up to.

    Will keep watching! :)

These are great…love the texture. I took a week-long workshop a few years ago where there are several workshops going on at a time. Mary Todd Beam was giving one of the workshops and she did a slideshow of her work one night, explaining how she works and what excites her. She seems like a super lady and her students did really interesting work.

    Hi Wendy
I love the textures and the effect, another book I’ll need to look out for. I tried to comment the other day but was unable to for some reason.

Wow! These are spectacular. I think this kind of work makes the very best use of acrylic and someday hope to do some exploration myself with all the cool gels and textures and mediums. This almost looks airbrushed. Just beautiful!

I love these! They look like a lot of fun to do, too. I am going to look at your book recommendations too. Thanks for including those.

These are just gorgeous Wendy! I don’t have that book but I’ve done a similar style of thing using gesso (a thick one) on bookboard to create the texture….now I’ll have to get this book too I think if these are anything to go by!

So glad you enjoyed doing the credit card technique that was on my blog. Try lots more colour combo’s….you sound like you did “marvel”. lol

What a great effect! I ordered that book from interlibrary loan. Can’t wait to see it.

What wonderful colours. Next time you’re demonstrating Matisse I must try to get there to see how you did that.
