Last week we went shopping at Birkenhead Point. It’s a big shopping centre that began with the conversion of some old warehouses in the 80s. It’s right on the water and most of the shops are factory outlets. More recently it has had a huge makeover and is much nicer now though not quite finished.
Along the shore that faces towards the harbour bridge (some distance away) they blocked off the view with huge blocks of apartments. There used to be a pub where you could get lunch and go out on the lawn and watch the view while you ate. Recently, however they have made a nice little walkway/park along that foreshore. We weren’t lucky with the shopping, so we wandered down there and ….lo and behold……. it’s Cockatoo Island.
The red-roofed buildings on the left are on Spectacle Island and behind that is Cockatoo Island. Behind that again is the north shore. You might recognise the other side of this building, and perhaps you can also see the drawing office, right at the top. Odd to see things from such a different angle. It was late enough in the day for this time of year and though it was warm the sky was rather strange.
There are good places to sketch all along that shore, along the marina round the corner, and we even saw some good pipes. Going back!

I thought – this doesn’t look like Birkenhead ?? Then I checked out your bio and everything fell into place. I was thinking of Birkenhead, Liverpool, U.K. not Birkenhead, Sydney, Australia. Great sketch!
There’s a Birkenhead in Auckland New Zealand also, but this is the Sydney one.
Nice quick watercolor sketch.
