A two hour train journey to Rome, morphed into two and a half hours, due to late-running trains. But once in Rome we got a taxi without delay, straight to the hotel and glory of glories…it has a lift, an ascensore. The location is perfect, but Tripadvisor had said 70 steps, so we thought, well….we only have to get the baggage up there once. Not a problem. Up in the lift.
Room is small (we knew that) but comfortable and clean. Receptionists are friendly. Just what we want. Our room looks out across the street at the building I lived in 40 years ago. If I could time travel, I would see myself looking out of one of the windows opposite.
Went out again quite quickly, to see if I still had my bearings. Down to the Piazza Navona. Thousands of tourists. No chance of taking a four-year-old to ride a bicicletta around there now. My plans of an evening dining there also went out the window. It was not my plan to dine with hundreds of other tourists. From there to the Pantheon. Immediately afterwards we found the ice cream shop with 150 flavours. I had Crema Catalan and Meringa. Past Palazzo Madama, across the Corso and within a few minutes we are at Trevi Fountain and Broni is trying on shoes in the shop where I used to buy them, back in the day.
A drink and some dinner in Piazza Borghese. The ‘piccolo bar’ where Gabriella used to have breakfast coffee is a restaurant now. Sad for me, knowing that Gabriella has been gone for many years and I would have so loved to see her again.
